EMMA SMITH GAINS PLACE WITH ENGLISH YOUTH BALLET
Founded in 1998, English Youth Ballet presents full-length classical ballets in the regional theatres of England, Scotland and Wales. Bringing opportunity to young dancers outside London aged 8-18 years to perform within a professional setting.
Each year the professional principal dancers are joined by 100 young dancers to presents 7/8 productions in cities and regional areas throughout the UK.
Founder and Director Janet Lewis, backed by an experienced professional team, brings her enormous energy, drive, enthusiasm and unique creative flair to inspire and lead young dancers to fulfil their potential and to provides them with a unique opportunity to experience life in a professional ballet company.
Now in its 12th year EYB and has built it into a highly successful youth dance company. The demand for places is expressed by the hundreds of young dancers who audition annually. Many of our students go on to vocational training having gained enormous confidence, invaluable performing experience and great pleasure from their involvement with EYB.
Emma was one of the talented dancers to be asked to join the youth ballet this year and we are very proud of her. Here is her write up of the audition process:
On Thursday 14 th January, I attended an audition for the English Youth Ballet's
production of Giselle at the New Wimbledon Theatre. After an hour and three quarters of intensive dancing I was delighted to be offered a place in the company.
What does this mean?
I will have 2 full weekends of rehearsals at the end of March, followed by 6 days in the Easter holidays. I will have 2 days break before returning for an on-stage rehearsal on Thursday 14 th April followed by 3 performances on Friday 16 th and Saturday 17 th April.
I don't know what part I will have yet but I will find out at the casting day on 2 nd March.
I am really looking forward to the production as it will be a chance to dance with professionals and other children and to improve my dance skills.

Crazy for You!
We are thrilled to have had a group of our own talented students take part in the Wycombe Swan's summer youth project this year. Amy Millns, Lottie Roberts-Rhodes, Lois Wayment, Holly Matthews, Jasmine Atufe, Lucy Smith, Jodie Wayment, Emily Sumner, Gabriella Cooper, Amy Preston and Brittany Cunnane were part of the 250 strong cast which spent 2 unforgettable weeks in August learning, perfecting and performing the Gershwin musical, Crazy For You.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Swan's Youth Project, it is a fantastic programme that has been going for 17 years now. The production is entirely made up of passionate and talented kids from age 10 to 19 that do everything from dancing, singing and acting to costume making, set design and stage management. The Director, Musical Director, Choreographer and Technical crew all work in professional theatre and run the production as a professional show.
This year, as ever, it was slick, energetic and fantastically entertaining. The energy radiating from 250 kids on stage all hugely passionate about their performance is extraordinary and breathtaking.
We are so proud of all our wonderful students who took on the challenge of learning a show in 11 days, working sometimes 12 hours a day and we were there to support them over the 4 incredible performances.
Well done girls!
Uniform
Can all students and parents please ensure that correct uniform is worn to classes. In particular, ballet students should have their hair off their faces in a bun. We do appreciate that time is often short when bringing children directly from school, but hair gel and a few pins can work wonders! If you are having difficulty with your child’s hair, please ask us for advice.
Car Parking
The rear car park is needed for teachers. Please do not park there or drive into Peters Close to drop children off, but use the free public car park in the High Street. The residents of Peters Close would much appreciate your cooperation in this matter- thank you!
Show Time!
